Preparation for the Sacrament of the Eucharist is designed to draw your child into a fuller and more active participation in the parish community. Through participation in the Mass and the Eucharist, your child becomes one with Christ and the community. This preparation begins in the home through prayer and attendance at Mass, for your child to have a true understanding of the Mass and Communion.

First Communion Preparation This is a two year preparation process per the requirements of the Diocese of Kalamazoo. This preparation for First Communion normally begins after Baptism at the age of 7 or 8. The first class begins with First Communion 1 followed by First Communion 2 the next year. In the first year the students will focus on building a basic Catholic foundation as well as learning and memorizing basic Catholic prayers including, but not limited to the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be. In the second year students will continue to build on that foundation focusing on the Ten Commandments and direct preparation for their First Confession and First Communion. For students beyond the normal ages of preparation for First Communion there will still be a two year process. In the first year students will be placed in the class that corresponds with their age. This will allow them the opportunity to catch up and gain basic Catholic teaching. In the second year the students will move on to the next corresponding grade and in addition participate in sessions specifically geared towards preparation to make their First Confession and First Communion. These will be held once a month on a Tuesday evening. The dates for the 2017-18 are the following from 6pm-7:30p in the Parish Center: September 18th, October 17th, November 14th, December 12th, January 16th, February 20th, March 13th, and April 16th.

NOTE:For any circumstances beyond the normal age of Sacramental Preparation, please contact the Director of Faith Formation. While we seek to be open and flexible towards individuals and their families, we expect that parents to be involved in the preparation of their students for the sacraments regardless of when their students are preparing, but more so when the students are beyond the normal age of preparation. Most important though, it is a joy, honor, and privilege to prepare students for the Sacraments and the staff and volunteers at St. Philip seek to do just that along with helping each person to know, love, and serve God in a deep and profound way.
