This sacrament consists of prayers by the priest and an anointing with an olive oil called the Oil of Sick. People may be anointed at any stage of a serious illness, or before a surgery, or because of advanced years and the limitations which come with age. A priest can be called to anoint a sick person at home, in a hospital or nursing home, or in the church. The sacrament is an effective sign of God's healing power, helping someone spiritually, emotionally, and sometimes even physically. When possible, this sacrament may be preceded by the Sacrament of Penance and followed with Holy Communion.
